Westport is a beautiful charming town along the Wild Atlantic Way. Just a leisurely walk down the streets with their colourful flowers, traditional shop fronts and warm welcome will warm your heart. They have won the Irish Tidy Towns competition numerous times and its obvious why.

There are plenty of great places to eat in the town from beautiful local produce with a French Twist at Savoir fare to fresh made pizzas at Westport Woodfire, you will find a cuisine to suit all and all budgets.

The town has a great night life with plenty of great music to be found. Matt Molloys Pub , owned by Matt Molloy from the Chieftains, it is famous the world round for its traditional music and is well worth the visit – even if there is no music, as it is a very cosy traditional pub.

You could spend a day just strolling around Westport enjoying the shopping, food & ambiance. But there is also so much to do the surrounding region.

Croagh Patrick is almost on your doorstep when you visit Westport, and several hundred people climb it daily during the summer months. On the last Sunday in July (“Reek Sunday”) upwards of 25,000 pilgrims make the ascent. A rewarding panoramic view of Clew Bay dotted with its 365 islands makes the experience worthwhile after such a strenuous climb if the clouds lift. Enjoy at pint in Campbells pub at the base as well done to yourself.

Fancy a cycle? Why not take on the 42 mile miles of the multi award winning Great Western Greenway all the way to Achill island. The Greenway follows the path of the old Westport to Achill Midland Great Western Railway line which closed in 1937 and almost entirely off the roads. It meanders through some of the most beautiful and idyllic countryside you’ll find anywhere in Ireland. Bring your bike or there are plenty of places to hire. Clew Bay Bike Hire in the town – they will even collect you and the bike at the other end!

Westport House is another great day out and has an entrance start from the street. The house is steeped in history as far back as Grace O Malley (Grannaile) Pirate queen of Connaught. Take a tour of the house and gardens or burn off some energy in the Pirate Adventure Park – great fun for all the family.

Westport is the Gateway from Mayo into Connemara. With Leenane just a 30 minute drive away, take a boat tour with Killary Fjord Boat Tours on Irelands only fjord or head over to Kylemore Abbey. This is only a sample of all the things to enjoy in and around Westport. We haven’t even mentioned the amazing beaches, the adventure activities, golf at Westport House, a trip to Achill island and so much more! You definitely need a week to experience it all.
