The stunning Clare Island is located 3.5 miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland. Clare Island is the largest (5 miles long and 3 miles wide) of the 365 islands in Clew Bay. The ferry to the island is from Roonagh Pier which is just outside the village of Louisburg and only takes 25mins.
The island is a great location for history buffs, nature lovers or just for anyone that would like to take a step back from it all.
The islands silhouette is dominated by the peak of Knockmore on the North Western edge. This drops down to some of the most dramatic cliffs in Europe giving a home to numerous nesting sea birds. A climb to the top of the hill is a true Wild Atlantic Way experience with jaw dropping views. The island also hosts several other looped walks that show off the island. If walking isn’t your thing, you can try something more adventurous like Sea Angling, Mountain biking or activities with Clare Island Adventures .

Famous as the ancestral home of the legendary Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley (Granuaile) the island’s rich history, geological and biological landscape can be explored on foot, bike or mini bus. Be sure to take time out to view the Blue Flag Beach, Granuaile’s Castle, the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the Lighthouse, the Napoleonic Tower and the various Bronze-Age sites. Call into the Heritage Centre to learn even more about the island.
The island also hosts 2 bars, a community centre and a small shop. As you can see there is something for everyone to enjoy while taking a break from our fast paced life’s.
