Achill Island

Achill Island

Sort By:

Achill Island is located on the west coast of County Mayo situated to the north and west of Westport and Clew bay. Although it is an Island it is connected to the mainland by a bridge across Achill Sound at Mullrany.

The Island has an incredible amount to offer visitors. Whatever you are looking for, Achill Island is sure to provide it. This area is one of the very best in Ireland to rent a holiday home.

Amazing cliffs and stunning ocean views out over the Atlantic in every direction. There are numerous small bars and restaurants and you don’t have to travel too far to get a bite to eat or a pint. The Island has plenty of great fish and seafood available, and local fishermen and shellfish farmers supply the restaurants.

There is a great variety of walks in the area from a stroll along the beach to the more strenuous mountain walking Achill Island and the Curraun Peninsula offer a hillwalking paradise. Unlike many other popular walking destinations in the west of Ireland, where access to the land is becoming increasingly restricted, most of the countryside on Achill is in common ownership which means that it is freely open and accessible for hillwalking. There is lots of walking information Here

Island provides a haven for watersports activities of all types. Achill boasts five Blue Flag beaches, a magnificent – and shallow – fresh water lake at Keel, and a wealth of historical remnants, marine biology and other features to explore under water.
Surfing, Kitesurfing and Kayaking/Canoeing Lessons are all available.

The island is a great base for the angler with a huge number of surf beaches and shore marks, and a number of charter boats working from the Island. Achill Island holds the two shark records recorded in Ireland.

If you have patience and a pair of binoculars the cliffs around the Island provide a great location for whale watching and basking sharks are a regular feature during the spring and summer. Many birds nest in the cliffs providing great opportunities for birdwatching.

“Atlantic Drive” along the southern shore of the Island is a very popular part of the Wild Atlantic Way and an evening drive along here is not to be missed, it is a great place to watch the sunset over the ocean. take a look at our great value holiday homes in this area.
