If you want to get away from it all in an area that does not suffer from mass tourism the Tourmakeady area is well worth a visit. Right on the shores of lough Mask it is very peaceful and has outstanding scenery with lake and mountain views. There are lots of walks of all levels in the area, loads of fishing, with trout and pike being the favourite target species. Nearby you have the premier watersports  and outdoor education center Petersburg at Clonbur.

There are some great walks in the area and there is lots of  detail about routes and other interesting information on the Tourmakeady Village website Here . A particular favourite is the Tourmakeady Woods walk and nature trail with lots to see including a stunning waterfall and lots more.


Angling in the area is exceptional. Lough Mask is a large limestone lough of 22,000 acres in area and, along with Lough Corrib, is one of the best known brown trout fisheries in Ireland. The lough produces good catches to wetfly from about mid-April. Dapping the mayfly, daddylonglegs or grasshopper can bring about excellent results during the various months of the season. The lough continues to produce more trout with every season, last season been one of the better ones.

Lough Mask is also famous for its large ferox trout and every season anglers take a number of these great trout, mostly all over 10 lb and nearly always to trolled baits. The record for the lough is 18 lb, but others over 20 lb have been found including one of 22 lb some 10-years ago. There are some useful contacts for guides in the area Here

If you want to let the walkers go for a hike and the and fishers go fishing while you take some time out there is lots of really interesting shops, cafes and restaurants in both Westport and Castlebar so you will never really be stuck for something to do, and if you fancy a relaxing pint there are four pubs in the village.
Leenane is 40m from the village, Cong 30 minutes, and Petersburg Outdoor Centre 25 minutes.
